Personal Information Protection and
Electronic Documents Act

PRIVACY LAW IN FORCE JANUARY 1, 2004

All organizations must comply with the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) by January 1, 2004.

PIPEDA contains rules for how organizations may collect, use and disclose personal information in the course of their commercial activities, and the consents that are required from individuals to do so.

To comply with PIPEDA, every organization must create a written privacy policy, appoint a chief privacy officer, and educate its employees on privacy obligations. Its information handling practices must comply with requirements for things such as security, accuracy and an individual's ability to control the use of his or her information.

In addition to complying with the law, there are valid business reasons for organizations to deal with privacy. January 1 2004 is right around the corner. Organizations need to take steps to comply now as it takes time to properly implement privacy policies and procedures.
